Using IRS Where's My Refund
The IRS provides a free online tool to track your federal refund status. Access it at:
- Web: irs.gov/refunds
- Mobile: IRS2Go app (iOS and Android)
What you need:
- Social Security Number (or ITIN)
- Filing status (Single, MFJ, MFS, HOH, QSS)
- Exact refund amount (from your filed return)
The tool updates once per day, usually overnight — checking multiple times won't show new information.
Refund Timeline by Filing Method
| Method | When to Start Checking | Typical Refund Time |
|---|---|---|
| E-file + Direct Deposit | 24 hours after filing | 21 days or less |
| E-file + Paper Check | 24 hours after filing | 21 days + mailing time |
| Paper Return + Direct Deposit | 4 weeks after mailing | 6–8 weeks |
| Paper Return + Paper Check | 4 weeks after mailing | 6–8 weeks + mailing |
| Amended Return (1040-X) | 3 weeks after filing | 16–20 weeks |
Three Status Messages
The tool shows one of three messages:
- Return Received — IRS has your return and is processing it
- Refund Approved — Processing complete, refund scheduled for deposit/mailing
- Refund Sent — Deposited to your bank or check mailed (check arrives 5–7 business days after mailing date)
EITC and ACTC Refund Hold
If you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), the IRS is required by law (PATH Act) to hold these refunds until at least February 27. This applies even if you filed in January.
The earliest these refunds are typically deposited is the first week of March.
Why Is My Refund Taking Longer?
Common causes of delay:
| Reason | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Identity verification needed | Watch for IRS Letter 5071C by mail — respond promptly at idverify.irs.gov |
| Error on your return | IRS will mail a letter — respond within 60 days |
| Offset for debt (student loans, child support) | Contact the agency listed in the offset notice |
| Return under review | Wait — may take 45–60 additional days |
| Paper return | Allow 6–8 weeks from mailing date |
If It's Been More Than 21 Days (E-file)
If 21+ days have passed since e-filing and "Where's My Refund" shows no movement beyond "Return Received," call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or use the Taxpayer Assistance Center locator. Have your return information ready.
Getting Refund Fast: Direct Deposit Tips
- Use direct deposit to a bank account — arrives up to 5 days faster than a check
- Double-check routing/account numbers before filing (wrong numbers cause weeks of delay)
- Split refunds into up to 3 accounts using Form 8888
- Some banks post direct deposits 1–2 days early
